Another,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6730710&amp;GUID=3EE5CC65-8455-477B-8601-0E7E89FD9A40&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intro 980<\/a>, sponsored by Councilmmeber Julie Won, looks at boosting penalties for immigration service providers that violate terms of their service.<\/p>\n<p>The measures comes as the Trump administration seeks to deport documented and undocumented immigrants alike, sparking outsize fear in the city\u2019s booming immigrant population. Immigration scams have been skyrocketing in the city in recent years,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/surge-in-nyc-migrants-fuels-rise-in-immigration-services-fraud-complaints\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gothamist reported<\/a>, has hundreds of thousands of migrants have poured into the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraudulent providers take advantage of that fear and anxiety in communities, and people sell services that may not be legal or helpful to people,\u201d Manuel Castro, commissioner of the Mayor\u2019s Office of Immigrant Affairs, told Gothamist last year.<\/p>\n<p>Hanif\u2019s bill looks to meet these migrants in their communities and curb misleading information to those looking for essential help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill would require the outreach to include information about common fraudulent schemes,\u201d a summary of Hanif\u2019s bill says. \u201cAnd how to avoid them and to be conducted through specific media, including television, internet, radio, print, subway advertisements, and LinkNYC kiosks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill would also require the city to bolster its reporting of such schemes.<\/p>\n<p>Won\u2019s bill looks at increasing penalties for violating immigration assistant requirements and regulations.<\/p>\n<p>As it stands, the first violation comes with a civil penalty of no less than $500 and no more than $5,000,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=6730710&amp;GUID=3EE5CC65-8455-477B-8601-0E7E89FD9A40&amp;Options=&amp;Search=\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the bill.<\/a>&nbsp;After that, any violation is a civil penalty anywhere from $1,000-$10,000.
