The New York City Council passed legislation on Wednesday that will allow for same-day and walk-in appointments at certain IDNYC service enrollment centers. It was one of many changes to the system to\u00a0improve the application process<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bill, sponsored by Councilmember Shahana K. Hanif, will also make it so that residents can find the earliest available date and time on any online appointment scheduling system.<\/p>\n

The city will have to provide in-person application appointments to match the demand for IDNYC and develop an annual training program for employees involved in the application process. Additionally, the city will have to provide a process in which a supervisor can review documents that have been declined during an application appointment.<\/p>\n

Currently, New Yorkers must make an appointment online or through 311 to get an IDNYC card. Appointments are made available each Friday for the following week.<\/p>\n

IDNYC is a free government-issued identification card<\/a> that is eligible for all residents at least 10 years old and up. First-time applicants get a free year membership to 33 cultural institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, the New York Botanical Garden, The MET and more.<\/p>\n

The approved bill to bring application changes to IDNYC is expected to take effect later this year.<\/p>\n
