Councilmember Sandra Ung hosted City Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers on a walk through Downtown Flushing on Friday morning to discuss infrastructure and transportation issues in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank Majority Whip Brooks-Powers for taking an interest in transportation issues in my district and across the city,\u201d said Council Member Sandra Ung<\/strong>. \u201cWhile Downtown Flushing is the opposite of a transit desert, hosting so many different types of mass transit in the span of just a few blocks in a busy business district presents its own unique challenges. The primary challenge is congestion and making sure that our streets and sidewalks are safe and clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDowntown Flushing is a district rich with transportation options,\u201d said NYC Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, Chair of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee<\/strong>. \u201cAs I learned today, transit rich districts bring other issues to ensure all New Yorkers can safely and economically travel throughout New York City. Daylighting, safe sidewalks and through-fares, and ADA accessible stations ensure New Yorkers can utilize all available transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Downtown Flushing is the terminus of the 7 train, and Council Member Ung\u2019s district includes two stops on the Long Island Railroad, one in Murray Hill and another on Main Street. Nearly 20 MTA bus lines pass through Downtown Flushing, as well as the Nassau Inter-County Express bus, making Flushing the busiest bus-to-train transfer hub in the entire city.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and Main Street is the third busiest intersection in New York City behind only Times Square and Union Square. <\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Council Member Ung invited Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez to Flushing to see firsthand the transportation issues in the neighborhood, including congestion on 37th<\/sup> Avenue and 40th<\/sup> Road. Two weeks later, the council member hosted Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga on a walk along Main Street to discuss the increase in street vendors and sidewalk congestion.<\/p>\n

Majority Whip Brooks-Powers, who chairs the City Council\u2019s Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, is visiting the other 50 Council District across the five boroughs to meet with elected officials and community stakeholders to better understand the city\u2019s transportation needs. Council Member Ung\u2019s district was the 18th<\/sup> stop on her tour.<\/p>\n

After she has visited each district, she will host listening sessions with each Borough Delegation that will be open to the public.<\/p>\n
