Councilmember Sandra Ung hosted Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga on a visit to downtown Flushing on Tuesday to discuss the proliferation of street vendors.<\/p>\n

The Council Member discussed the growing number of vendors, as well as other businesses using sidewalk space to sell their goods, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate the sidewalks.<\/p>\n

She said she was looking forward to partnering with the Commissioner to ensure a safe and hygienic experience for visitors to the downtown area.  <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank Commissioner Mayuga for visiting Flushing to walk the streets and see many of the issues local residents have brought to my attention regarding the increasing congestion on our sidewalks,\u201d said Council Member Sandra Ung<\/strong>. \u201cI appreciate that the Commissioner and the Adams Administration have been responsive and willing partners in addressing this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVending is a complicated issue and Flushing is one of the areas where we know there is an especially difficult balance to strike between vendors, businesses and pedestrians,\u201d said Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga<\/strong>. \u201cI appreciate Council Member Ung meeting with us and walking through the neighborhood as we work to educate vendors and hear the concerns of all involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Council Member also discussed the enforcement of existing regulations requiring all street vendors to be licensed by the city. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal here is not to be punitive, but rather to ensure that our sidewalks are clear and safe,\u201d said Council Member Ung. \u201cI want to thank the Commissioner for visiting my district and listening to the concerns of my constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n
