NEW YORK – Council Member Rory I. Lancman, Chair of the Committee on the Justice System, issued the following statement after six of the Mayor’s nominees for interim Civil Court judgeships were sworn in this morning. The Mayor has now filled nine of the twelve interim Civil Court vacancies, after continued advocacy from Council Member Lancman.
“I’m pleased that the pace of the Mayor’s one-year appointments to the bench has quickened this year compared to last, putting the majority of the judges in place in early February as opposed to May. Our courts cannot function without judges, and the addition of these qualified judges will help ease the case backlog and ensure justice can be rendered.
“I urge Mayor de Blasio to promptly fill the three outstanding interim Civil Court vacancies and proactively seek out candidates for future vacancies that may arise.”
