The driver suspected the cyclist was breaking into vehicles and struck him with his car on Broadway near Ellery Street

NEW YORK, NY– Following the news of a vigilante motorist running down a cyclist, Council Member Robert E. Cornegy Jr. offered the following statement:

“It is never okay to take the law into your own hands, and is outrageous to run someone down with an SUV because you suspect they are breaking into cars. Our system of law affords a presumption of innocence, and it is unconscionable for someone to take the law into their own hands like this. This driver decided he was judge, jury, and executioner.

If you suspect a crime, please contact the police and follow the appropriate avenues of reporting. I am glad that no bystanders were injured in this fit of violence. Observing the damage left in the wake of the incident, it is clear that this could have gone much worse.”
