NEW YORK, NY– NYC Council Member Robert E. Cornegy Jr., Chair of Housing and Buildings Committee, released the following statement today following news of a construction worker fatality at a Recycling Plant in the Bronx on Saturday.

“This tragedy highlights the need for safe work sites, whether or not they are active construction zones. My thoughts are with the loved ones and colleagues of the man who died on Saturday at New York Recycling.”

According to the Department of Buildings, this was not an active construction work site. The individual that died on the job was welding a suspended excavator bucket to a bulldozer, when the bucket somehow fell on top of him.

The Fire Department of New York responded to the scene, and OSHA and OCME have been notified. The NYPD also reported to the scene and are investigating.
