NEW YORK, NY – NYC Council Member Robert E. Cornegy, Jr. (D-36), Chair of the Council’s Committee on Housing and Buildings, released the following statement in response to the passing of young hero Lucas Silverio and news of a massive fire:

“My most sincere condolences to the family of the young hero, Lucas Silverio, who passed away due to injuries sustained in a building fire in the Belmont section of the Bronx. My condolences are also extended to the family of 3-year-old Yasleen McDonald, the young girl Silverio attempted to save, but who also passed away. As the father of six, I admire the bravery exhibited by Lucas, and extend deeply heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of Lucas and Yasleen.

My team and I are also monitoring developments on this morning’s massive blaze that tore through three homes in Midwood, Brooklyn, sending 12 people to the hospital, including three firefighters and a 6-week-old infant. The FDNY deserves praise for their quick response and work to extinguish the fire. While the cause of the fire is unclear, I am committed to working with the council to reduce the likelihood of fires, increase preparedness, and doing everything in my power to ensure incidents like these are avoided in the future.”
