City Council’s Housing & Buildings Chairman Releases Statement re: Thursday’s Scaffolding Incidents

BROOKLYN, NY – NYC Council Member Robert E. Cornegy, Jr. (D-36) released the following statement today regarding two scaffolding incidents, one in Brooklyn which injured three workers on Driggs Avenue in Williamsburg and the other which resulted in the closure of Sutton Place between 57th & 58th St. in midtown Manhattan:

“The two scaffolding incidents this morning underscore the need to bolster the safety of scaffolding in our city. It is disconcerting that two life-threatening incidents like these could happen almost simultaneously. We have to ensure there is not something endemic about the the way we as a City are overseeing the installation and maintenance of scaffolding. I have been in touch with the Department of Buildings, who have issued violations and stop work orders at both locations, and are continuing to investigate the incidents. At the same time, it is important we ensure there are not other sites that could pose a potential threat to the safety of workers and passersby, and I will request a review of the DOB’s scaffold permitting procedures if appropriate based on the outcome of their investigation. In the meantime, I pray the individuals injured in this morning’s incident in Williamsburg make a speedy and complete recovery.”
