Let me be clear: diminishing or erasing equity-centered frameworks is not the path forward. The Council stands firm in our responsibility to confront and correct the systemic injustices created by longstanding racial and economic disparities, and to ensure that equity remains a guiding principle in how we govern, legislate, and serve.

The Council recognizes the release of the City’s Racial Equity Plan as an important step within a broader, voter-mandated effort to embed equity into the foundation of our City’s governance. New Yorkers made their voices heard through a historic vote, affirming that transparency, accountability, and fairness must be central to how City government operates.

We also acknowledge the work of Commission on Racial Equity (CORE) in advancing this process and establishing a framework that begins to align City agencies, services, and investments with the needs of communities that have long been underserved.

As a co-equal branch of government, the Council remains committed to working in partnership to ensure that the goals outlined in this plan translate into meaningful, measurable outcomes. Our role is clear: to legislate, oversee, and advocate in ways that advance equity across every district and community we serve.

We are currently in the public comment period for this plan, and we strongly encourage all New Yorkers to engage in this process. This is a critical opportunity for residents, advocates, and community leaders to share their perspectives, elevate lived experiences, and help shape a final plan that reflects the needs of our communities. Public participation is not only welcomed, it is essential to ensuring this plan delivers real, measurable impact.

The Council looks forward to actively participating in this 30-day review process alongside the public, and to continuing this work in partnership with communities across the five boroughs. We will continue to do this work, thoughtfully, transparently, and with purpose, so that equity is not just a principle, but a lived reality for every New Yorker.”

###

“At a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts are being challenged and, in some cases, scaled back across our country, the New York City Council—representing one of the most diverse populations in the nation—remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing equity for all New Yorkers.
