For too long, needless deportations have ripped our families asunder and torn our communities apart. This administrative relief is smart policy that will benefit the country economically and socially for generations to come. It will keep families together and strengthen ties between immigrants and the country they so proudly call home and contribute to. Like Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush before him, President Obama’s executive order is legal and necessary given the increasingly obstructionist Republican House which has fought real comprehensive immigration reform every step of the way. By signing this executive order, the President is living up to our highest ideals as a country: that we put compassion and common sense before fear and cynicism. Here in New York City, thousands will now finally be safe from heartless and destructive deportations.

The New York City Council is proud to have led the way at the local level by passing sweeping immigration legislation while House Republicans continuously blocked reform. Our most recent efforts included landmark legislation to introduce a new municipal ID program, legislation to end New York City’s cooperation with federal authorities that seek to detain immigrants without probable cause and funding a groundbreaking public-private partnership to provide legal assistance for unaccompanied minors.

There is more work to be done and we must build upon this administrative relief by finally passing comprehensive immigration reform. I look forward to working with New York’s Congressional delegation and others in Washington to make immigration reform a reality as we finally seek to fix our nations broken immigration laws.”

Declaracion De La Presidenta Del Concejo Municipal de Nueva York Melissa Mark-Viverito
Re: Alivio Administrativo

###

“For millions of undocumented Americans who pay taxes, go to work or attend school, today’s decision by the President is welcome news.
