His change of position is heartening. Puerto Rican LGBT families should be afforded the same rights, responsibilities and respect as the rest of the families. We would also like to thank San Juan Mayor Carmen Yul\u00edn Cruz and Senate President Eduardo Bhatia, as well as several senators and representatives, for favoring marriage equality and this change of position. We now look forward to a favorable decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in the marriage equality case under its consideration. The right to marry should be afforded to everyone no matter where you live or whom you love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Background<\/p>\n<p>Puerto Rican Secretary of Justice C\u00e9sar Miranda filed a brief today to the effect of not defending the ban on marriage for LGBT couples in response to the appeal at the First Circuit Court of Appeals in the case Conde-Vidal v. Garcia-Padilla. This, after the U. S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico dismissed in October 2014 the lawsuit seeking to end the Commonwealth\u2019s discriminatory ban on marriage for LGBT couples.<\/p>\n<p>Declaraci\u00f3n por la Presidenta Mark-Viverito y el Caucus LGBT del Concejo Municipal<br \/>\nRe: Decisi\u00f3n del Gobierno de Puerto Rico de Parar de Defender la Prohibici\u00f3n de los Derechos de Matrimonio para las Personas LGBTT<br \/>\nNueva York\u2014 \u201cAplaudimos y agradecemos al gobernador Gobernador Alejandro Garc\u00eda Padilla y su administraci\u00f3n por escoger estar en el lado correcto de la historia en el tema del matrimonio igualitario. Su cambio de posici\u00f3n es esperanzadora. Las familias LGBTT puertorrique\u00f1as deben tener los mismos derechos, responsabilidades y respeto que el resto de las familias. El derecho al matrimonio debe ser extendido a toda persona sin importar donde viva o a quien ame\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trasfondo<\/p>\n<p>El Secretario de Justicia de Puerto Rico, C\u00e9sar Miranda, someti\u00f3 un alegato hoy con el efecto de dejar de defender la prohibici\u00f3n al matrimonio para las parejas LGBTT como respuesta a una apelaci\u00f3n en la Corte de Apelaciones del Primer Circuito en el caso de Conde-Vidal v. Garcia-Padilla.
