\u201cWe believe that we can and should work to get to $1 billion in cuts\u00a0to New York City’s\u00a0police spending in the Fiscal 2021 budget,\u00a0an unprecedented reduction that would\u00a0not only limit the scope of the NYPD, but also\u00a0show our commitment towards moving away from the failed policing policies of the past.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no doubt that this is an ambitious goal, but\u00a0it is one that the\u00a0time we are in\u00a0calls for–both here in New York City\u00a0and nationwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is possible:\u00a0We have identified savings that\u00a0would cut over $1 billion dollars, including reducing\u00a0uniform\u00a0headcount\u00a0through attrition,\u00a0cutting\u00a0overtime, shifting responsibilities away from the NYPD,\u00a0finding efficiencies and savings in OTPS spending, and lowering associated fringe expenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAs we do this, we must prioritize the most impacted communities and hear their demands and needs\u00a0across all areas\u00a0during this budget process. This should be a deliberative and good faith discussion\u00a0of\u00a0the best path forward for New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOur budget must reflect the reality that\u00a0policing\u00a0needs fundamental reform.\u00a0Over the last few weeks, we have seen an outpouring of New Yorkers demanding\u00a0change\u00a0from their leaders.\u00a0It is our job to listen \u2013 and to act.\u00a0 We will not let this moment pass, and we will\u00a0fight for the budget they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
