One year later, we are still searching for justice for Eric Garner and his family. We are not going to stop that search until justice is achieved.

“In New York City, we continue the pursuit of criminal justice reforms which will make our system more fair and just for all. This includes our conversations with Commissioner Bratton and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to lower penalties for low level offenses, the Council’s work to establish a city-wide bail fund and the continued efforts to create better relations between the police and the communities they serve.

“This tragedy was also compounded by the failure of a District Attorney to successfully get an indictment. Thanks to Governor Cuomo, Attorney General Schneiderman will soon be in charge of these cases and in the future a Special Prosecutor will be appointed. This is an important and critical step.

“New York City endured difficult moments in the past year, but by listening to one another we can move forward together to create a city that is more fair and just for all.”

###

“Eric Garner was a New Yorker who shared the same hopes and dreams all New Yorkers have and his death was an unnecessary tragedy.
