Nadler, BP Brewer, Senator Hoylman, Assembly Member Rosenthal Act to Protect Senior Housing Tenants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>New York, NY<\/strong> \u2013 NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson<br \/>\njoined Representative Jerrold Nadler, Manhattan Borough President Gale A.<br \/>\nBrewer, Senator Brad Hoylman, and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal to protect<br \/>\nseniors at Riverview Senior Independent Living after the owner suddenly decided<br \/>\nto sell the building, which will force the elderly tenants out of their homes.<br \/>\nSenior housing is in short supply in this city, so this closure places a<br \/>\ntremendous burden on the residents of Riverview.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, the elected officials demanded more<br \/>\ninformation from Homes for the Homeless Institute, Inc., the owner of the<br \/>\nbuilding, and requested an immediate tenant meeting as well as a separate<br \/>\nmeeting with elected officials. The owner immediately agreed to a meeting after<br \/>\nreceiving this letter.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The full text of the letter is below and the letter itself<br \/>\nis attached. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaker Corey Johnson<br \/>\nwill hold a media availability on this issue at City Hall at 3 pm. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>###<\/p>\n<p>Dear Mr. Ralph da Costa Nunez: <\/p>\n<p>We are writing on behalf of our constituents who<br \/>\nreside at the Riverview Senior Independent Living (\u201cRiverview\u201d), located at 519<br \/>\nWest 49th Street. <\/p>\n<p>In a memo circulated to residents on December 3, 2019,<br \/>\nJessica Schmidt the Director of the Riverview informed its residents that the<br \/>\nbuilding owner, Homes for the Homeless Institute, Inc., decided to sell the<br \/>\nbuilding and that Riverview would be closing \u201csometime in the first few months<br \/>\nof 2020.\u201d Presenting senior citizens, one of whom is a 99-year old holocaust<br \/>\nsurvivor, with a vague and frightening update about the future of their homes,<br \/>\nespecially during the holiday season, is indefensible. <\/p>\n<p>It is imperative that Homes for the Homeless<br \/>\nprovide its tenants with more information about the sale of the building,<br \/>\nconvene a tenant meeting with them to discuss alternatives and provide those<br \/>\nwho wish to find alternative accommodations with adequate time to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of communication surrounding this issue is wrong, especially for a non-profit that prides itself in helping families escape homelessness. In addition to the requests above, we request an urgent meeting with Homes for the Homeless to discuss this issue.
