\nThe New York City Council has selected Arup \u2013
\nthe globally respected engineering and design firm \u2013 to provide independent,
\noutside expertise on the New York City Department of Transportation\u2019s
\nBrooklyn-Queens Expressway Rehabilitation\/Replacement Project.<\/p>\n

Arup will provide technical expertise to the Council and community on this
\ncritical infrastructure project, reviewing engineering reports of the triple cantilever
\nstructure, and assessing the feasibility of the numerous public proposals from
\nDOT and other groups. This effort comes in response to DOT\u2019s proposal to
\ntemporarily replace the Brooklyn Heights Promenade with a six-lane highway
\nwhile the rest of the cantilever structure is rebuilt.  <\/p>\n

As the city looks to spend billions of dollars to improve and expand the BQE,
\nthe Council wants to make sure the project is done in a way that reflects our
\ncurrent transportation priorities and minimally impacts the adjacent
\ncommunities during construction and in the future. Drawing on Arup\u2019s extensive
\nexperience in civil, highway, and bridge engineering and their visionary
\napproach to urban transportation \u2013 including their work on the Allston I-90
\nviaduct replacement project in Boston \u2013 this process will review DOT\u2019s
\nassessment of the current structure, incorporate feedback from local groups and
\nelected officials to make sure their concerns are heard and acted on, evaluate
\nthe proposals put forward, and potentially develop alternatives.  <\/p>\n

This independent review will help the Council more informed decision about the
\nfuture of the BQE and help to shape potential alternatives being analyzed in the
\nEIS.<\/p>\n

\nwe don’t just rebuild a highway but look at our transportation infrastructure
\nin a holistic way. Many compelling ideas have been put forward by the
\nneighboring communities and we need to make sure the public understands all of
\nour options and the tradeoffs associated with each of them before we can move
\nforward with any plan,\u201d said City Council Speaker Corey Johnson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nthe City make better informed decisions about the BQE and that the City will
