“Like my fellow New Yorkers, I am relieved that the person suspected to be responsible for yesterday’s horrific subway shooting in Brooklyn is in police custody. I am grateful for the hard work of the NYPD and its law enforcement partners, as well as everyday New Yorkers who helped provide information that led to his arrest.

“We must address the proliferation of guns in this country that contributes to the violence wreaking havoc in communities across our city and country. As a city, there is serious review needed regarding what did and did not work during and in the aftermath of this incident. We also must focus on truly supporting victims of violence and communities deeply traumatized by horrific incidents like this mass shooting and the frequent violence too many neighborhoods experience. Trauma recovery and victim services have to be a major part of ensuring an effective approach to public safety that stops cycles of violence and makes us safer, which is why the Council is prioritizing them in the city budget. We will continue to advocate for smart safety strategies that include all stakeholders to keep New Yorkers safe by preventing crime and violence, and investing in the health and well-being of communities.”
