New York City, NY<\/strong>–\u00a0January 23, 2025 \u2013 Today,\u00a0Council Member Pierina Sanchez issued the following statement in response to\u00a0the release of the Public Advocate’s ‘Worst Landlords\u00a0Watchlist<\/a>‘:<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Yorkers deserve safe and dignified housing, regardless of their\u00a0zip\u00a0code.\u00a0As is blatantly clear in this year\u2019s ‘Worst Landlords Watchlist,’\u00a0those\u00a0who own buildings with dozens of open violations\u00a0need to be held accountable\u00a0for\u00a0negligence and deliver long-overdue repairs for the safety of their tenants.\u00a0In\u00a0the Bronx, we have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the\u00a0inaction\u00a0of\u00a0these\u00a0landlords too many times with disasters like the Twin Parks Fire in 2022, the partial collapse of Billingsley Terrace\u00a0in 2023, and\u00a0just last week,\u00a0the\u00a0fires\u00a0on Heath\u00a0and Wallace\u00a0Avenues\u00a0that displaced\u00a0over 100 families.\u00a0The Heath\u00a0building is owned by the #1 Worst Landlord\u00a0identified\u00a0in the Public\u00a0Advocate’s\u00a02025\u00a0list.<\/p>\n

My legislation, the Housing Rescue and Resident Protection Act (Int. 1063<\/a>),\u00a0takes up buildings like these. Recognizing\u00a0and responding to\u00a0the flaws of the existing\u00a0third party\u00a0transfer system,\u00a0HRRPA\u00a0offers a path to safe and dignified housing for residents living in untenable conditions. Taking aim at the city\u2019s most distressed properties, these buildings would be flagged and, after a fair process, turned over to responsible ownership.\u00a0I call on my colleagues in the Council to support this critical legislation and applaud the Public Advocate for his diligence in shining a light on owners who have violated the trust of their tenants\u00a0and left their buildings to\u00a0deteriorate. Together, we must act.\u201d<\/p>\n
