In the early hours of Saturday morning, a young homeless man wielding a metal pipe bludgeoned to death four other homeless men and left another in critical condition. The brutal attack began around 1:40 AM when a man with “severe trauma to the head” was discovered on the Bowery. Early reports indicate that the victims were attacked while sleeping.  The individual responsible for the attacks is currently in police custody.

“This senseless and devastating act of violence against the most vulnerable members of our community must serve as a wakeup call: we must do more than the bare minimum to help the tens of thousands of New Yorkers in our homeless shelters and on our streets. As the City faces a mounting housing crisis, the tragic loss of four New Yorkers makes it clear that the response to the magnitude of this emergency has been insufficient. Therefore, I call upon Mayor Bill de Blasio and his Administration to join me, faith leaders, homeless advocates, community leaders and every day New Yorkers to create a bold plan that rises to the immensity of the challenge we are facing. Our approach must include both an ‘all-in’ strategy of maximizing every resource to create more affordable housing now and a citywide, multi-agency framework that gets these New Yorkers the help they need quickly and safely.  I want to thank the officers of the New York City Police Department’s 5th Precinct for their professionalism and dedication to keeping the Chinatown community informed and calm.”
