LOWER EAST SIDE – Council Member Margaret S. Chin released the following statement in response to last night’s tragic hit-and-run that led to the death of a homeless member of the community:
“This is a heartbreaking loss, and I urge NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill to conduct a full investigation into the senseless hit-and-run incident that caused the death of one of our community’s most vulnerable members,” said Council Member Chin. “Thank you to the neighbors and friends who never gave up on Johnny during his time of need. To my Lower Manhattan community: if you know of anyone who is in need of shelter or social services, please reach out to my office for immediate assistance.”
On Friday morning at around 3:30 AM, a 49 year old hit-and-run victim was discovered on Delancey and Clinton Streets with severe head trauma. Johnny, the victim, had been struggling with homelessness and required a wheelchair.
Information on the driver or footage of the incident has yet to surface.
