New York, NY—In response to the Mayor’s announcement today that he will soon issue an executive order requiring paid parental leave for non-union city employees, Council Member Margaret Chin issued the following statement:
“With this action, new fathers will no longer have to choose between providing for their families and caring for them. This extension of paternity leave benefits for non-union city employees is an important step towards establishing paid leave for all new, working parents. I thank Mayor de Blasio for his commitment to expanding the reach of paid leave to cover more and more of our City’s workforce.”
Council Member Chin was the sponsor of Intro. 1-2014, which expanded paid sick leave benefits to New Yorkers working for businesses with five or more employees. The legislation was enacted in March 2014.
