{"id":171,"date":"2026-08-03T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/lynn-schulman\/?p=171"},"modified":"2026-08-10T16:06:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T16:06:44","slug":"qns-cm-schulman-honors-queens-girl-scout-for-efforts-to-improve-healthcare-accessibility-in-district-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/lynn-schulman\/2026\/08\/03\/qns-cm-schulman-honors-queens-girl-scout-for-efforts-to-improve-healthcare-accessibility-in-district-29\/","title":{"rendered":"QNS &#8211; CM Schulman honors Queens Girl Scout for efforts to improve healthcare accessibility in District 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"background-color:#ffffff\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">By Shane O&#8217;Brien<\/mark><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council Member Lynn Schulman recognized a local Queens Girl Scout for her longtime efforts to improve healthcare accessibility in Council District 29, inviting her to a meeting with the New York City Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Girl Scout leader Julia Siu Lin, a student at the Bronx High School of Science and a longtime Girl Scout, met with Schulman and Martin at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Gotham offices in Long Island City on Tuesday to discuss healthcare, accessibility and the future of medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lin, a six-time Girl Scout cookie top seller, has developed a number of projects to improve healthcare accessibility within her community, including Simple Signs for Support, which teaches basic Americal Sign Language (ASL) to seniors,, patients and healthcare staff. As part of the project, she developed ASL reference materials and resources that have been adopted across multiple units at NYC Health + Hospitals\/Elmhurst<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the meeting, Lin spoke with Schulman and Martin about her work to expand Simple Signs for Support and make basic sign language more accessible to patients and healthcare providers, including through an ASL Bingo program. Lin also discussed her aspirations to become a physician and her interest in continuing to expand her work in healthcare accessibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin shared his own journey into medicine, detailing how his mother\u2019s experience with metastatic breast cancer inspired him to become an emergency physician after witnessing the doctors who helped save her life. Martin also presented Lin with a pin for her Girl Scout badge jacket in recognition of her Girl Scout achievements and service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schulman credited Lin for her work to make healthcare \u201cmore accessible and compassionate\u201d for others, describing her as an \u201cextraordinary young woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHer work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, her dedication to patients at Elmhurst Hospital, and her commitment to improving the lives of people in our community are truly inspiring,\u201d Schulman said in a statement. \u201cIt was wonderful to see her sit down with Dr. Martin, share her ideas, and talk about her dream of becoming a doctor. I know Julia will continue to make a difference wherever her future takes her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin, meanwhile, described Lin as a \u201cremarkable young leader\u201d who embodies the spirit of determination and service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHer dream of becoming a doctor is truly inspiring, and I have no doubt that her passion and dedication will lead her to achieve great things in the future,\u201d Martin said in a statement. \u201cYoung people like Julia remind us of the importance of nurturing the next generation of health leaders who will shape the future of our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lin has received a New York City Council Citation for her achievements throughout her Girl Scout career, which include being named the top cookie seller in Queens for six years straight, selling more than 17,000 boxes of cookies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has also led the Garden to Pantry initiative, supplying fresh produce to local families, and helping to raise more than $20,000 in comfort supplies for patients at Elmhurst Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lin said it was an honor to meet both Schulman and Martin earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHearing about Dr. Martin\u2019s journey into medicine and having the opportunity to share my own passion for improving healthcare accessibility was so inspiring,\u201d Lin said. \u201cI look forward to continuing to serve my community and pursuing a career that combines medicine, advocacy, and service to improve the lives of others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Link to story: <a
