12th Council District Participatory Budgeting 2026<\/h3>\n

District 12 Community, Participatory Budgeting is back!<\/p>\n

Team Riley is announcing the return of Participatory Budgeting for this year, starting with our Idea Collection phase – which will continue online through the deadline\u2014November 28th<\/em>. Residents, as young as 11 years old, are able to pitch ideas for capital projects for the community. PB NYC volunteer delegates will help organize and submit them to agencies to see if it is an eligible capital project. Once feedback is received from agencies, top projects get voted on in the Spring.<\/p>\n

What is Participatory Budgeting?<\/h3>\n

Through Participatory Budgeting in New York City (PBNYC), community members \u2014 like you \u2014 directly decide how to spend at least $1,000,000 in participating Council Districts.<\/p>\n

PBNYC funds physical infrastructure projects that benefit the public, cost at least $50,000 and have a lifespan of at least 5 years. Local improvements to schools, parks, libraries, public housing, streets and other public spaces can be funded through this process.<\/p>\n

How does Participatory Budgeting work?<\/h3>\n

Idea Collection and Volunteer Recruitment<\/h4>\n

September – November<\/em><\/h6>\n

Through community meetings, residents brainstorm ideas and recruit Budget Delegates for the current cycle. Idea collection deadline is November 11, 2023.<\/p>\n

Proposal Development<\/h4>\n

November- February<\/em><\/h6>\n

Budget Delegates transform ideas into full proposals, with support from city agencies and staff. Delegates narrow down proposals and select projects that meet the needs of the community.<\/p>\n

GOTV and Vote Week<\/h4>\n

April<\/em><\/h6>\n

Once proposals have been determined, Budget Delegates and residents get out the vote and prepare for a nine day community vote.<\/p>\n

Evaluation and Planning<\/h4>\n

May – June<\/em><\/h6>\n

Winning projects are included in New York City\u2019s upcoming fiscal year budget. Staff and stakeholders evaluate the process and oversee the implementation of winning projects by agencies.<\/p>\n
