“Today, there is a report of another death inside our city’s jails. This marks the 9th death in 2021 alone. 

This tragedy only highlights what we already knew: New York City’s correctional facilities are in crisis.

I have called together an emergency meeting with agency heads tomorrow to create an immediate plan of action. Next week, the City Council’s Criminal Justice Committee will also hold an oversight hearing to address the disturbing conditions in Rikers and across our city’s jails. 

We can’t do this alone. The Governor and Mayor must take immediate steps to address this crisis.”
