“Over the past year, I have worked with my colleagues in the City Council to focus on reducing the impact of the high costs of renting an apartment, particularly on low-income New Yorkers.
Whether it’s security deposits or broker fees, the system has been stacked against the average New Yorker and created financial instability for too long.
I commend Mayor de Blasio on his proposal regarding alternatives to security deposits through giving renters the option to pay through insurance or in installments. I also want to thank Council Member Rivera for her partnership and leadership on these issues.
I look forward to expanding these efforts to help thousands of New Yorkers and make New York City more affordable.”
