Midtown South Rezoning Moves Ahead
The rezoning will unlock badly needed housing in Midtown South
NEW YORK – Today the Midtown South Mixed Use rezoning passed a vote in the Subcommittee for Zoning and Franchises, moving forward to a vote in the full Council. The rezoning will allow housing to be built in Midtown South, and will create up to 9,500 new homes in the center of one of the most bustling areas of Manhattan.
This plan has a deep commitment to affordability, and follows the affordability requirements laid out by Mandatory Inclusionary Housing. The plan also encourages office conversions, which is particularly needed in an area of Manhattan that has seen a drastic increase in vacancies in the past ten years. Buildings sitting empty will become homes, and with that, Midtown South will be transformed into a live-work neighborhood where New Yorkers can be steps away from world-class transit,
