“For months we have been advocating for making 49th and 50th Streets between 5th and 6th Avenues car-free as a means to address pedestrian congestion in one of the City’s busiest public spaces. Yesterday, we were encouraged to hear that the City was moving forward with a proposal to enlarge pedestrian space along 5th Avenue to address this congestion during the holiday season. While this is not a long-term solution, it is a good first step.

As the holiday season approaches we cannot stick with the same old strategy of funneling hundreds of thousands of pedestrians into tight spaces. We are deeply thankful to the Department of Transportation for their willingness to work with us and the Fifth Avenue Association, and we support their agenda of improving NYC residents’ experiences with their streets. We urge the Mayor to move forward with both plans.”
