“As chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings in the City Council, I’ve consistently said that we must use every tool at our disposal to not just keep tenants in their homes but to make sure that their buildings are well maintained.  In using these tools, we are finally beginning to speak in the language that unscrupulous landlords understand: their wallets.

“It is one thing to talk about the battle that may be impending with the Trump Administration, it is another to prepare for it with tools and resources. As chair of the Committee on Housing and Buildings, I commend the Mayor on the announcement made today. It moves our city dramatically forward in helping keep New Yorkers in their homes.”

“I commend Governor Cuomo on his plan to offer free tuition to New York’s families. A college education should not be a debt sentence for years to come. Given the economy and the slow growth of available jobs, it is irresponsible to saddle young adults with debt without a path to work their way out of it after graduation.

STATEMENT FROM COUNCIL MEMBER WILLIAMS

“As we listen daily, we see a playbook of fear that is used in every authoritarian and fascist regime in the past. The use of a hyperbolic threat is the first step before horrible acts occur. Donald Trump is unraveling all that our country claims to stand for. As the son of Grenadian immigrants, and as representative of a district that has a large number of foreign-born residents, Trump’s assault on immigration is offensive and shows the worst of America.
