Council Members Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore), Deborah Rose (D-North Shore), and Minority Leader Steve Matteo commissioned official New York City Council Proclamations for two non-profit organizations that do work on Staten Island relating to bullying, substance abuse, and other mental health issues; Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS) and IlluminArt Productions. The proclamations were presented to SIMHS President Fern Zagor and IlluminArt Executive Producing Director Arlene Sorkin at today’s New York City Council stated meeting.

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore), in partnership with IlluminArt Productions and the Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS), is hosting an anti-bullying workshop for parents at I.S. 24 in Great Kills.

IlluminArt is going to be putting on a production aimed at broadening the perspectives of audience members and providing examples to analyze and navigate as a group during the subsequent Q&A panel.

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R – South Shore) has been working with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC DPR) over the last several months to provide safer, easier access to the Owl Hollow soccer fields on the south shore of Staten Island. Constituents have contacted Borelli’s office in significant numbers to express their concern regarding the park’s accessibility.

Council Member Joseph Borelli (R-South Shore) and Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo (R-Mid Island) are calling for a public hearing of the Council’s Health Committee to investigate the protocols that are currently in place with regard to water quality testing, and the actions taken by the NYC Department of Education to inappropriately influence the results of the testing.

Council Member Joseph Borelli and Minority Leader Steven Matteo are today responding to the Independent Budget Office’s (IBO) report on Class 1 property tax equity, as a result of a request by the council members to look into a potential disparity. The Council Members disagree with the IBO on the following points:

  1. The IBO did not look at time adjusted sales and weighted averages for FY 16, and focused exclusively on calendar year 2015.

The Department of Finance (NYC DOF) will be reminding homeowners who receive the Senior Citizen Homeowner’s Exemption (SCHE) or Disabled Homeowner’s Exemption (DHE) to renew their property tax exemptions before the deadline on March 15, 2017. The reductions received by eligible applicants range from 5% to 50% of the homeowner’s total assessed property value, representing substantial savings to senior and disabled homeowners.
