Council Member Joseph Borelli wants you to be prepared for severe weather! This webpage highlights many websites, services, and phone numbers that can be of use to you during a severe weather event such as a hurricane, tropical cyclone, or nor’easter.

To track severe weather, you can visit the National Weather Service online at www.weather.gov for regularly updated weather forecasts. Additionally, you can visit the NYC Severe Weather Center at www.nyc.gov/severeweather to monitor localized weather alerts and the status of select city services (such as schools, garbage collection, and traffic rules). You can also enroll in Notify NYC at www.notify.nyc, a free service that enables you to receive emergency alerts from the City of New York via email or text message.

Being prepared means you can protect yourself, your family, your pets, and even your property from severe weather! The New York City Department of Emergency Management has created a website where you can learn about the steps to take before and after a severe weather event. You can visit that website by going to www.on.nyc.gov/2fesPuf. You can also review the Ready New York brochure at www.on.nyc.gov/2fvNJlB to learn more about being prepared for severe weather.

In the event of an evacuation, a coordinated effort will be undertaken by city and state agencies to ensure that affected residents can safely leave their homes and arrive at designated evacuation centers in the area. The New York City Department of Emergency Management launched an initiative titled Know Your Zone to educate New Yorkers on everything related to an evacuation, including flood zones and routes. You can view this resource at www.nyc.gov/knowyourzone.
