Borelli Funds $500,000 Dental Lab Upgrade at Tottenville High School The Dental Laboratory Tech program @ THS is the only Dental Lab on Staten Island

Council Member Joseph C. Borelli (R-South Shore) is providing $500,000 in funding from his capital budget this year to upgrade Tottenville High School’s Dental Lab.

The Dental Laboratory Technology program at Tottenville High School is the only Dental Laboratory program on Staten Island. The program is a three-year sequence enabling students to develop techniques and skills in the field of Dental Laboratory Technology and is NYSED CTE Approved Program. Students who complete the program not only have successfully mastered industry requirements but also have met standards for science, career and technical education and are eligible for a Career & Technical Education (CTE) endorsement on their diplomas.

The program at Tottenville trains students in the fabrication of prosthetics such as crowns, bridges and denture construction. Several students are working or interning in dental laboratories and dental offices, and getting firsthand experience in making prosthetic dental restorations and working chair side with dentists. In addition, Tottenville is the only high school in the country to offer the Sirona Dental Company CAD/CAM Digital Dentistry Design and Milling Equipment and form labs 3D Model printing, an innovative technology that allows students to use digital scans to produce crown and bridge restorations.

Our direct long-term involvement with colleges such as N.Y.C. College of Technology, N.Y.U College of Dentistry provides students with an opportunity to pursue a post-secondary education in Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Dental Lab Technology, Dental Assisting or Radiology and other related fields of study.

“Tottenville is the largest high school on Staten Island and is home to some of the most innovative programming in the entire New York City school system,” said Council Member Borelli. “The dental lab upgrades are going to ensure that Tottenville High School remains at the cutting edge of tech-integrated education and continues to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to prepare them for lucrative careers in dentistry design and model printing. I want to thank Principal Scarmato, Cliff Bloom, and the staff at THS for their total dedication to their students; this wouldn’t be possible without them.”

We are so lucky and grateful to have a Council Member who, since he took office, has provided Tottenville H.S. with the tools to enhance our academic programs and offerings to our students. This is evident in his commitment to revamp our Career and Technical Education programs and for this year’s focus on our dental lab program,” said Principal Joe Scarmato of Tottenville High School.
