The New York City Council has a dedicated team of city planners, attorneys, and administrative staff that support Council Members and the Land Use Committee. The Land Use Division helps the committee Chairs conduct hearings, examines changes to land use regulations on behalf of Council Members, analyzes land use policies and engages in neighborhood planning.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Planner has a critical role in advising the City Council on a variety of projects, supporting the Council’s planning and policy initiatives, and providing technical assistance to Council Members and their staff on land use changes under Council review. Under the supervision of the Director and Deputy Directors of the Land Use Division, the Senior Planner will ensure timely review of Land Use applications before the Council, analyze development proposals, and lead planning studies across a range of topics. The Senior Planner will provide guidance and direction to Project Managers on complex land use applications. They will create graphic and written materials for presentations, representing the Council with external stakeholders and public agencies and collaborating internally with other Council divisions.

Requirements

The candidate should possess a Master’s degree and 5+ years of full time experience in urban planning. Must demonstrate familiarity with NYC Zoning Resolution and CEQR, ability to research and interpret standard NYC datasets, and proficiency with ArcGIS. Prospective candidates for this position must possess excellent writing ability, research and communication skills, work well as part of a diverse team, and demonstrate a strong ability to manage multiple projects while working under tight deadlines. Also of extreme importance, prospective candidates must be able to exercise sound and careful judgement.

New York City Residency Required within 90 Days of Appointment.
