The New York City Council, the City’s legislative body, is seeking to fill the position of Data Visualization Specialist in the Finance Division.
The Council’s Finance Division is a team of analysts, attorneys, economists, and administrative staff who provide Council Members with research on budgetary actions and their fiscal impact. They also work with Council Members to monitor and evaluate agency spending. The Council’s Finance Committee plays an important role in the budget negotiating process by advocating for the needs of New Yorkers and overseeing the hearing process.
The Data Visualization Specialist would work with Finance Division staff to improve the visual and written materials produced by the division, to ensure that complex information is presented in an accessible and uniform tone.
Key responsibilities would include, but are not limited to:
- Working with Division analysts and economists on designing and editing infographics to support written reports and visual presentations;
- With guidance from the Division leadership, producing and maintaining templates and guidelines to create a cohesive, consistent, and accessible document standard for the division; and
- Editing budget and economic reports for clarity and consistency.Candidates should possess a bachelor’s degree or better with studies in communications, media, graphic design, or other related fields, with a demonstrated interest in public service and superior writing, data, and infographics skills.
Work experience a plus. Familiarity with city government, public or urban policy, economics, and/or finance is a plus. Experience working with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, R and other similar software packages a plus. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to express ideas and concepts clearly and concisely both in writing, visually, and orally, and the ability to work well with others under tight deadlines.
New York City Residency Required within 90 Days of Appointment.
