{"id":164,"date":"2024-02-26T18:56:12","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T18:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/joann-ariola\/?p=164"},"modified":"2024-03-14T18:56:39","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T18:56:39","slug":"qns-cm-joann-ariola-leads-effort-to-keep-streets-in-southeast-queens-clean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/joann-ariola\/2024\/02\/26\/qns-cm-joann-ariola-leads-effort-to-keep-streets-in-southeast-queens-clean\/","title":{"rendered":"QNS &#8211; CM Joann Ariola leads effort to keep streets in southeast Queens clean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Anthony Medina<\/p>\n<p>Council Member Joann Ariola aims to keep the streets clean in her southeast Queens district with the help of city agencies and an employment program looking to improve the area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every week participants of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceoworks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Employment Opportunities<\/a>&nbsp;(CEO)\u2014 a second-chance program giving formerly incarcerated people support in finding jobs \u2014 work to keep the Queens neighborhoods in Ariola\u2019s district (D-23) clear of trash and dangerous conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ariola allocated $79,000 in discretionary funding to the CEO organization this year and plans to utilize the program moving forward. The council member says this collaboration between CEO and her office benefits everyone involved\u2014from the community to the previously incarcerated, who are trying to integrate themselves back into society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only does it help our residents, but it also helps the workers at CEO as well,\u201d Ariola said. \u201cThey give people a second chance and help integrate their employees back into society by giving them jobs and putting them on the road to success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group, aided by Ariola\u2019s office, has cleaned up several locations where trash has accumulated,&nbsp;including Colman Square and Shore Parkway in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/howard-beach\">Howard Beach;<\/a>&nbsp;the Addabbo Bridge on Cross Bay Boulevard; Rockaway Beach Boulevard; and the Flight 587 Memorial Park in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/rockaway\">Rockaway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ariola said she is focused on quality-of-life issues, and cleaning up dirty streets is a step in the right direction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy deploying these dedicated individuals to regular litter hot spots throughout the week, we can make sure that our neighborhoods remain clean and tidy \u2013 and clean streets are a major component of maintaining the quality of life that District 32 residents deserve,\u201d Ariola said, who often posts photos of the cleanups on her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Ariola2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social media pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_476654\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CEO-Ice-2-e1705702113118.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-476654\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Center for Employment Opportunities throws salt on an icy sidewalk in front of a busy bus stop in Woodhaven.Photo courtesy the office of Councilwoman Joann Ariola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_476652\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/CEO-Ice-3-e1705702035856.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-476652\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Center for Employment Opportunities helps rid Queens streets of trash, snow and ice.Photo courtesy the office of Councilwoman Joann Ariola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the city finally saw its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=amny+snowfall&amp;sca_esv=1e966f1761b05aef&amp;rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS907US908&amp;sxsrf=ACQVn0_Vrpy75LWcY07KGCFuVNwbIOZ6pA%3A1707169967256&amp;ei=r1jBZa-QD9im5NoPkcSLmAY&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjvo-Dbl5WEAxVYE1kFHRHiAmMQ4dUDCBA&amp;uact=5&amp;oq=amny+snowfall&amp;gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiDWFtbnkgc25vd2ZhbGwyBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA0yBxAAGIAEGA1I2wJQrwFYrwFwAXgBkAEAmAFWoAFWqgEBMbgBA8gBAPgBAcICChAAGEcY1gQYsAPiAwQYACBBiAYBkAYI&amp;sclient=gws-wiz-serp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first snow in nearly two years<\/a>&nbsp;last month, members of CEO were out on Woodhaven Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue, clearing the bus stops and sidewalks from unsafe weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Ariola\u2019s office documented the clean-up while it was happening and while commuters waited for the Q11, Q53 and Q52 buses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ariola is also getting extra help from a number of city agencies to clean her district.<\/p>\n<p>She has partnered with the Woodhaven Swarm, a multi-agency initiative to clean streets in the area.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ariola\u2019s office, volunteers and members from the New York City Department of Sanitation, New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and NYCEDC help sweep up trash from areas in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/qns.com\/neighborhoods\/Woodhaven\">Woodhaven<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In total,\u00a0650 blocks in the 32nd District were swept in 2023 through these programs, while 176 properties had their graffiti removed.
