{"id":325,"date":"2025-10-31T18:49:41","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T18:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/jennifer-gutierrez\/?page_id=325"},"modified":"2025-11-03T13:25:58","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T13:25:58","slug":"snap-emergency-what-new-yorkers-need-to-know","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/jennifer-gutierrez\/snap-emergency-what-new-yorkers-need-to-know\/","title":{"rendered":"SNAP Emergency: What New Yorkers Need to Know"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overview<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has refused to release contingency funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).<\/p>\n<p>As a result, 1.8 million New Yorkers \u2014 including 540,000 children and 540,000 older adults \u2014 will lose access to their federally funded benefits starting November 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>SNAP provides <strong>$420 million each month<\/strong> to help New Yorkers put food on the table.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the City Is Doing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>NYC has announced <strong>$15 million in emergency funding<\/strong> to strengthen New York City\u2019s food assistance network and protect residents from hunger.<\/p>\n<p>Key City actions include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>$15 million in new funding<\/strong> for the <em>Community Food Connection (CFC)<\/em> program, supporting <strong>700+ food pantries and community kitchens<\/strong> across the five boroughs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>$820 million<\/strong> already invested this fiscal year in food programs:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$627M \u2013 NYC Public Schools breakfast and lunch programs<\/li>\n<li>$70.6M \u2013 Home-delivered meals for older adults<\/li>\n<li>$58.6M \u2013 CFC food pantry network<\/li>\n<li>$10M \u2013 DOHMH \u201cGroceries to Go\u201d program<\/li>\n<li>$8.5M \u2013 DYCD youth meal programs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Coordinated <strong>interagency outreach<\/strong> by DSS, HRA, MOFP, and other city agencies to ensure every SNAP recipient is connected to alternative food supports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the State Is Doing<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>New York State is also taking action:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Governor Hochul<\/strong> announced <strong>$30 million<\/strong> in emergency food assistance for <strong>16 million meals<\/strong> statewide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attorney General Letitia James<\/strong> has joined <strong>25 other states<\/strong> in a lawsuit against the USDA for illegally suspending benefits, citing <strong>$6 billion in unused contingency funds<\/strong>.
