On June 13, 2026, there were 6,608 people\u00a0detained\u00a0on Rikers Island and the vast majority \u2014 5,598 \u2014 are\u00a0awaiting trial. Over 50 years ago, the United States Supreme Court\u00a0held\u00a0that citizens detained in jail awaiting trial or serving a misdemeanor sentence retained their right to vote.<\/p>\n
