“The City Council is introducing a bill Thursday that would require landlords to raise the temperature in apartment buildings so that tenants use fewer space heaters. The Bronx fire that killed 17 people in January was sparked by a space heater.

During the “heat season,” which runs from Oct. 1 through May 31, landlords would have to increase thermostats from 68 degrees to 70 degrees during the day and from 62 degrees to 66 degrees at night.

The New York City Council convened an oversight hearing Monday on the city’s workforce development programs and plans amid pandemic recovery efforts. It was the first time Council members heard from officials in the administration of the new mayor, Eric Adams, who has repeatedly said workforce development is a top priority for him.

“Three months after being nominated to her post by Mayor Adams, the new commissioner for the city’s Department of Investigation demanded Tuesday that his budget provide her agency with more funding to make improvements toward fulfilling its mission.

“I’ve been getting complaints about these things for 15 years, and you can see why,” said Brewer. “They’re flying constantly.”

“Her gripes are shared by thousands of New Yorkers, who filed 21,620 complaints about helicopter noise to 311 in 2021, more than double the 10,359 filed in 2020.

And 2020′s figure was triple the 3,332 chopper noise complaints filed in 2019, city data show.

City Councilwoman Gale Brewer demanded Wednesday that Mayor Adams and Gov. Hochul start cracking down on high-speed, app-based delivery services like JOKR, Buyk and Fridge — businesses she claims are violating the city’s zoning laws and possibly state liquor license requirements.

The so-called dark stores, many of which promise delivery within 15 minutes, occupy spaces zoned by the city for commercial use, but, according to Brewer, they essentially serve as warehouses where the services store their products and dispatch their delivery workers from.
