“New York City housing advocates, as well as Mayor Eric Adams, Speaker Adrienne Adams and the Hotel Trades Council, are overwhelmingly in support of passing the hotel conversion bill in the state assembly this legislative session to help address the housing crisis.

During the event, City Council Member Gale Brewer discussed the historic significance of the 120-year-old monument and the hardships it’s currently facing — needing $50 to $52 million in repairs — while calling on the community to come together to sign a petition advocating for the funding of its restoration.

During a Memorial Day event Monday, the crumbling Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at Riverside Park was surrounded by a fence, as it’s too dangerous to keep open.

The white marble monument was dedicated in 1902 to honor Union Army soldiers and sailors. It was closed five years ago after an assessment found it had deteriorated due to age and lack of drainage.
