CORONA, NY (July 18, 2020) — On Saturday, Council Member Francisco Moya issued the following statement on the death of Congressman John Lewis:

“There isn’t a single American who doesn’t owe John Lewis a debt. He lifted up the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised and disregarded by his refusal to accept second-class status. Lewis’s moral compass was a true north for all of us. He inspired generations of freedom fighters with his penchant for making ‘good trouble.’ It was one of the great honors of my life to earn his endorsement in my run for City Council in 2017 and I think about the responsibilities that come with his support often. There will never be another John Lewis so it’s up to all of us to fight for justice and equity, refuse to wait for civil rights to trickle down to the disempowered, and to bring good trouble to the doorstep of everyone who would deny dignity and respect to anyone.”
