The bill renames 126th Street to “Seaver Way” as the Mets celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their 1969 World Series Championship

CITY HALL — On Wednesday, the Council of the City of New York passed Council Member Francisco Moya’s bill to rename 126th Street outside of City Field to Seaver Way in honor of the legendary Hall of Fame pitcher.

The street renaming comes as the New York Mets celebrate the 50th anniversary of their 1969 World Series—a goliath feat fueled in large part by Seaver’s first Cy Young award-winning season. The 12-time all-star went on to win the prestigious pitchers award two more times, earning him the nickname Tom Terrific en route to his place in Cooperstown.

“Tom Seaver may not have laid the bricks of Citi Field but he helped build the foundation this franchise is celebrated for,” Council Member Francisco Moya said. “Whether you were fortunate enough to watch Tom Seaver lead the Amazins to a World Series championship in 1969 or you grew up in the shadow of that greatness, Queens residents have always known their ballpark was built with his right arm. It’s only fitting for Citi Field to now reside on 41 Seaver Way. It’s an honor and childhood dream come true to immortalize one of the greatest Mets of all time with this street renaming.”

In his 20 seasons in the majors, Seaver won Rookie of the Year (with the Mets), was a three-time National League wins leader, three-time National League ERA leader, five-time National League strikeout leader and is ranked sixth all-time in strikeouts with 3,640 Ks.

The Mets will honor The Franchise with a ceremonial unveiling of Seaver Way at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 27. The street renaming leads off the Mets’ weekend celebration of the ‘69 World Series 50th Anniversary June 28-30 during their homestand against the Atlanta Braves.

This event is open to the public. Fans are asked to arrive at Citi Field by 10 a.m. Parking will be available in Lot A via Shea Road. Please be advised that 126th Street between Northern Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue will be closed at 10 a.m.
