{"id":618,"date":"2020-06-05T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T17:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/farah-louis\/?p=618"},"modified":"2020-06-25T16:46:32","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T16:46:32","slug":"national-caribbean-american-heritage-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/farah-louis\/2020\/06\/05\/national-caribbean-american-heritage-month\/","title":{"rendered":"National Caribbean-American Heritage Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With our nation engulfed in anti-police brutality protests, there are parallels that can be drawn between the U.S. and Caribbean Diaspora &#8211; the journey towards freedom, equality, and justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we stand united regardless of race, religion, and faith to forge a progressive and inclusive path that will eradicate the systemic racism and prejudice that has sown discord in our community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the daughter of Caribbean immigrants, I am proud to be a part of and represent such a dynamic community of trailblazers who have broken through barriers to build a better life for their families. Our strength and sheer determination is derived from the undeterred spirit of our ancestors who fought back against oppression and won their independence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These courageous leaders knew that people power could accomplish any and everything that once seemed insurmountable &#8211; even liberation.
