New York, NY<\/strong> \u2013 Today, New York City Council Member Farah Louis introduced Intro. 1224, legislation to expand digital access for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n

This bill directs the Commissioner of the Department of Social Services to ensure that all homeless shelters in New York City are equipped with no-cost, reliable Wi-Fi, providing individuals with essential access to critical resources and opportunities to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n

“In our digital world, access to the Internet is no longer a luxury \u2013 it\u2019s a lifeline,” said Council Member Louis<\/strong>. “From applying for jobs and pursuing education to accessing healthcare and other vital resources, the Internet plays a central role in opening doors of opportunity. Yet, for too long, many residents in our shelters have been denied this essential resource.<\/p>\n

“Homelessness is already a daunting and isolating experience. We cannot allow a lack of Internet access to make it even harder for those in temporary housing to connect with the resources they need to get back on their feet.”<\/p>\n

Council Member Louis is committed to working with her City Council colleagues to remove barriers that keep too many New Yorkers from regaining stability and independence.<\/p>\n
