NEW YORK<\/strong> \u2014 Council Members Farah N. Louis, Rita Joseph, Selvena Brooks-Powers, and Mercedes Narcisse<\/strong> released the following joint statement after 17-year-old Terah Sauveur was fatally struck by a teen driver while crossing the intersection at Kings Highway and Avenue K in Brooklyn on Saturday. The driver remained at the scene.<\/p>\n

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBERS LOUIS, JOSEPH, BROOKS-POWERS & NARCISSE<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThis Saturday, we learned of the horrific death of 17-year-old Terah Sauveur. Sadly, he\u2019s not the first young person to be killed by traffic violence in New York City, and he will not be the last. While we are encouraged by DOT Commissioner Rodriguez’s commitment to safe streets, time is of the essence, as each day that action is delayed is a day where lives are needlessly put at risk. We\u2019re calling on this Administration to take swift action to reduce traffic deaths. Increased traffic calming measures, more deterrents to speeding, and upgrades to crosswalks can and will save lives if implemented. In this moment of intense grief, we must channel our emotions into constructive changes that prioritize pedestrian safety along our city’s streets and intersections that are notorious for crashes such as Kings Highway & Avenue K, Atlantic Avenue, Rockaway Avenue & Linden Avenue, Flatbush Avenue & Avenue H, Newkirk Avenue, East 59th Street & Second Avenue, Rivington Street, among others.”<\/p>\n
