FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW YORK ––– Council Member Farah N. Louis D-Brooklyn), Vice Co-Chair of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus, issued the following statement after five people were shot before 7 a.m. in separate incidents of gun violence on Sunday. All victims are listed in stable or critical condition.

STATEMENT BY COUNCIL MEMBER FARAH LOUIS

“It is unnerving for the families of Council District 45 to be awakened by the sound of multiple gunshots in the middle of the night. It is alarming that five people ranging in age from 19 years old to mid-40s were shot within the span of six hours. With Memorial Day, the unofficial start of summer just four weeks away, I am increasingly concerned that this past weekend of violence is a forewarning of the challenges that we must prepare to face during the warmer months. It is critical that we act with urgency and put an end to the crossfire by mobilizing the Cure Violence providers, faith leaders, and community residents who know how to deescalate the tensions among our youth.”

New York City Council Member Farah N. Louis represents the 45th Council District, which comprises Flatbush, East Flatbush, Midwood, Marine Park, Flatlands, & Kensington in Brooklyn, NY. Currently, she serves as Chair of the Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities, and Addictions. She is also a member of the committees on Civil Service and Labor; Economic Development; Education; Finance; Housing and Buildings; Women and Gender Equity; Youth Services.
