Our 2023 Summer Youth Series has ended. Check back here next year for our 2024 events!<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Last summer, the Office of Council Member Hudson launched our inaugural Summer Youth Series for young people across District 35. With the closure of the Madison Square Boys and Girls Club Navy Yard Club House, we teamed up with organizations and institutions across the District to host diverse youth programming every Friday throughout the summer. Some examples of the types of events we had included: movie nights, skateboard clinics, painting workshops, museum tours, and dance classes. <\/p>\n

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sam Pollard (MLK\/FBI<\/em>), executive produced by Ahmir \u201cQuestlove\u201d Thompson (Oscar-winning Summer of Soul<\/em>), Tariq Trotter (Descendant<\/em>), and produced by RadicalMedia, The League<\/em> celebrates the dynamic journey of Negro League baseball’s triumphs and challenges through the first half of the twentieth century. The story is told through previously unearthed archival footage and never-before-seen interviews with legendary players like Satchel Paige and Buck O\u2019Neil \u2013 whose early careers paved the way for the Jackie Robinson era \u2013 as well as celebrated Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Hank Aaron who started out in the Negro Leagues. From entrepreneurial titans Cumberland Posey and Gus Greenlee, whose intense rivalry fueled the rise of two of the best baseball teams ever to play the game, to Effa Manley, the activist owner of the Newark Eagles and the only woman ever admitted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, The League<\/em> explores Black baseball as an economic and social pillar of Black communities and a stage for some of the greatest athletes to ever play the game, while also examining the unintended consequences of integration. Amani Heywood is a Bronx-born Trinidadian abstract expressionist whose large-scale vibrant projects reflect his passion for philosophy, architecture, and fashion. Heywood’s art unveils a blend of serenity and chaos, creating a space that inspires curiosity. Heywood\u2019s intention is to invoke feelings of a meditative experience, sensations of transportation, and wandering through portal-like spaces. In this Abstract Painting 101, Amani Heywood will inspire our young neighbors to navigate the beauty of art and expression, unleashing their creative prowess.<\/strong><\/p>\n
