Council Member Costa Constantinides Statement on Amazon Potentially Coming to Western Queens

“It’s great Amazon recognizes the vibrant potential of Queens, as we all do, but there are naturally many concerns with any project this size, as some of my colleagues in government already pointed out. Amazon would certainly impact Astoria — where the housing stock is already tight with more than 20,000 seniors wait-listed for suitable affordable residences and has an affordability crisis overall — as well as Long Island City, which has seen almost a decade of unchecked development. New York City doesn’t give handouts to conglomerations — especially ones that push back against union labor. Amazon coming here means Astoria and Long Island City will become the next neighborhoods where profit comes before middle-class families or investing in our overburdened infrastructure. I hope we take this opportunity to treat these negotiations as a partnership, one where the interests of our communities come first and not giveaways to a multi-billion dollar corporation.”
