Queens Officials Organize Coat Drive

Astoria, N.Y. – Council Member Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria), State Senator Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria), Assembly Member Aravella Simotas (D-Astoria), and Assembly Member Michael DenDekker (D-East Elmhurst) gathered with over 100 coats that were donated by the community for people in need across the entire city.

“It is important during this cold season that we provide help to those in need,” said Councilman Constantinides. “It’s an honor to work with a great organization like New York Cares. My colleagues in the state government and I look forward to collecting warm coats for those who need it most.”

The gathering was part of a drive for lightly used winter coats in collaboration with New York Cares. Over 100 coats were collected at all four of the officials’ District Offices.

“I am proud to join Councilman Constantinides, Assemblywoman Simotas and Assemblyman DenDekker in helping New York Cares gather coats for those in need,” said Senator Gianaris. “Having recently experienced record low temperatures, I know we all appreciate the dangers freezing weather poses to our most vulnerable neighbors. Let’s work together to keep our fellow New Yorkers warm this winter.”

“This winter we have seen firsthand the dangerous cold temperatures that can put our community’s most vulnerable residents at risk,” said Assemblywoman Simotas. “I am proud to support this initiative and the dedicated volunteers working to ensure that those in need will have the ability to keep warm.”

“During this particularly cold and snowy winter, those that can should help those that need,” said Assemblyman DenDekker. “One way is by donating gently used, clean winter coats. I know there is a shortage of coats this year and I thank our Council Member Costa Constantinides for setting this drive up.”

Costa Constantinides represents the New York City Council’s 22nd District, which includes his native Astoria along with parts of Long Island City, Woodside, East Elmhurst, and Jackson Heights.
