Reading the Charts
“May 2008 Preliminary School Net Budget Change ” shows the net budget reduction each school would have suffered had the City Council not restored the budget cuts facing schools.
“School Budget Increase at Adoption ” shows how much funding the Department added to each school’s budget following the City Council restoration and pursuant to the letter agreement between Chancellor Klein and Speaker Christine Quinn. This total is comprised of newly restored tax levy funding, Contract for Excellence funding, or some combination of both. Coincident with the City Council’s $120 million restoration, the Department of Education disbursed $63 million in Contract for Excellence funding to schools. Together, these two funding allocations ensure that no school will begin next year with any less money that it ended the 2007-2008 school year, and give more than 300 schools a year-over-year increase.
“School Budget Net Change at Adoption ” shows how each school’s Fiscal 2009 budget compares to its Fiscal 2008 budget. A value of $0 means the school’s budget is held steady next year; a value greater than $0 indicates that the school’s budget will grow due to an infusion of additional Contract for Excellence funding.
