Kindergarten Admissions Was your child born in 2007? If so, give your child the healthy start he deserves by enrolling him in Kindergarten for the 2021-2013 school year. Children who attend kindergarten are more successful throughout their school careers: they are less likely to drop out of high school, more likely to go to college, and more likely to have academic success. New York City Council Districting Commission The New York City Charter requires that every ten years, after each decennial census, an independent commission be appointed to redraw Councilmanic District lines to accurately reflect the City's demographics. Each of the 51 Councilmanic Districts across the City may increase or decrease in size, depending on the Census data, to accommodate changes in population per the Census. Respect for All Week 2012 From February 13th - February 17th, Speaker Quinn and Chancellor Walcott have urged all NYC public schools to take part in a week long series of events to promote Respect for All in their classrooms. “Respect for All Week” is designed to focus all City schools on the importance of promoting respect for diversity and fostering inclusive learning environments for their students. Women's Reproductive Health Speaker Quinn and the Council have been working tirelessly on ensuring women's reproductive health rights are protected in our five boroughs. Federal Reproductive Rights Legislation There are several pieces of federal legislation currently being pushed as priorities by the conservative leadership of Congress. FoodWorks City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn unveiled an 86 page, comprehensive plan that sets a bold vision for a more sustainable food system—a ground-to-garbage approach unprecedented in the history of our city. The plan, ‘FoodWorks’, provides a blueprint for addressing issues at every phase of the food system, from agricultural production through post-consumption. The proposals focus on combating hunger and obesity to preserving regional farming and local food manufacturing to decreasing waste and energy usage. NYERS 4 MARKETS City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Council Members Chin and Thomas White, advocates from the food industry and community leaders today stood together to show their support for the redevelopment of the Fulton Fish Market area as a place to host a brand new market for local businesses and regional foods. The coalition of local leaders, food advocates and businesses committed to ensuring that any new development at this site must include a food market. Expansion of NYC Recycling Program
With the 40th anniversary of Earth Day less than two weeks away, Speaker Christine C. Quinn, together with Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Committee Chair Letitia James, and Council Members Mathieu Eugene, Julissa Ferreras, James Gennaro, Jessica Lappin, and Melissa Mark Viverito, today announced legislation that would dramatically expand and improve recycling in New York City. The package of legislation would mark the first significant expansion of the city’s residential recycling program since it was created in 1989. The Speaker and Council Members were joined by Eric Goldstein of the National Resources Defense Council, Ricardo Gotla of the NY League of Conservation Voters, Isabelle Silverman of the Environmental Defense Fund, Former DOS Commissioner Brendan Sexton, Christine Datz-Romero of the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Eddie Bautista of the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, and Dan Miner of the Sierra Club NYC.
